Conference Welcome Herman B. Gray, MD, was named president of Children's Hospital of Michigan in 2005. Gray has a long history with Children's Hospital of Michigan, dating back to the late 1970s when he served as chief pediatric resident. At the hospital, he served as vice president of graduate medical education, pediatric residency program director, chief of staff and then chief operating officer. Gray also served as associate dean for graduate medical education at Wayne State University School of Medicine. Under his leadership the residency program developed several innovative programs and successfully recruited a significant number of minorities. Gray continues to serve as a clinical associate professor in pediatrics. Gray earned his medical degree from the University of Michigan – Ann Arbor and also holds a physician executive MBA from the University of Tennessee. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and a member of the American Medical Association, Michigan State Medical Society, and Wayne County Medical Society. In addition to his career at the DMC, he has served as medical consultant for the Michigan Department of Community Health – Children's Special Health Services (CSHCS) and as vice president and medical director of clinical affairs for Blue Care Network. A pediatrician and child and family advocate, Gray has been honored numerous times for his humanitarian efforts related to pediatric health care, particularly children with special needs, and served on a variety of state and national committees and organizations. Gray is the first African American in the history of the hospital to serve as president.
