Irvin D. Reid was sworn in as Wayne State University's ninth president in November, 1997. He is a strong advocate of a role for higher education in regional economic development. He serves on boards of many international, national, business and community service organizations. He is also the former chair of the Michigan Presidents Council, comprising the 15 public universities in the State of Michigan. He has been a frequent participant in national and international meetings on global education. He was appointed by DaimlerChrysler to a 12-member steering committee to plan a triennial meeting of global business leaders known as the Berlin Seminar. In June 2006 Dr. Reid was the recipient of an Ernst & Young Entrepreneur Of The Year® award in the Central Great Lakes region. The Detroit News selected him as one of 12 Michiganians of the Year for 2000. In March 1999 he received the Distinguished Postgraduate Achievement Award in the fields of Education and Administration from Howard University. Previous to his assuming his role at Wayne State University, he was for more than eight years president of Montclair State University, the second largest higher education institution in the State of New Jersey. Over a 10-year period, he also served in a number of capacities at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga including dean of the School of Business Administration and John Stagmaier Professor of Economics and Business Administration; head of the Department of Marketing and Business Law; and Alan Lorberbaum Professor of Marketing. He holds master's and Ph.D. degrees in business and applied economics with a specialization in marketing from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, and bachelor's and master's degrees in general/experimental psychology from Howard University. He has a certificate in educational administration from Harvard University.
